Buying a Used Car Review! Peugeot 408 (since 2012) common problems, issues, defects and complaints

the first thing on a used 406 is to check the bodywork. The body hardware itself is reliably protected from corrosion, but the water-based paintwork remains quite delicate. In addition, on early copies, the hood was often repainted under warranty due to paint swelling.
But another problem has affected almost all cars. The fact is that the doorways were wiped very quickly due to excessively rigid seals. We must pay tribute to the dealers, who, without unnecessary wrangling under warranty, changed these rubber parts for new ones, and repainted the openings. Although it is not a fact that such problems will not appear in a year or two, which often happened. Knowing about this defect, since 2014, official dealers have already begun to offer to paste over these places with armored film. This measure really solved the problem, and since 2017, all 406s have been equipped with softer door seals.

In winter, door locks also often froze, and more often the rear ones. It happened that the driver and passengers simply could not get into the cabin because of this. The reason is banal - due to the condensate formed on the cables of the locks, the locking mechanism froze. The malfunction was easily eliminated by adding lubricant to the parts of the mechanism. The French took into account this flaw, and this defect has already been eliminated on post-styling machines. They also took note and finalized the constantly peeling plastic lining in front of the windshield.

Engines are also not sinless. Gasoline 1.6-liter "aspirated" with a capacity of 115 and 120 forces (depending on the gearbox) are by and large reliable. The turbocharged version is more difficult and more expensive to operate and repair. The main problem of turbo engines then was not the strongest chain in the gas distribution mechanism drive. It was already stretched for 50,000-80,000 km of run. Moreover, a poor-quality tensioner helped to reduce the life of the chain. It's good that the defective part was replaced under warranty. And sometimes two or three times. Only since 2015 has the entire mechanism been modernized and the number of complaints has been reduced.
In addition, oxygen and coolant sensors may “run out” in engines by 100,000 km. Usually, valve stem seals lie on this run, individual ignition coils fail, valve cover gaskets, oil filter brackets and pumps leak, as well as crankshaft and camshaft oil seals. There is also a problem with fuel pumps, both with the submersible one, which is located in the gas tank, and with the high-pressure fuel pump, which is installed under the hood.

But the diesel engine is reputed to be practically trouble-free. The main thing is to give it quality fuel from proven gas stations and change engine oil more often - preferably after 7500 - 10,000 km. And it must also be of high quality. Then the fuel pump, turbocharger and injectors are guaranteed to last up to 200,000 km and longer without repair.
Even more trouble is to be expected from the AT8 automatic transmission, the successor to the infamous AL-4. Despite the fact that it has been modernized and improved several times, it rarely withstands more than 150-180 thousand km. And then - only repair. Thank God it's relatively inexpensive. The box does not like torn driving, with sharp starts and braking, and, especially, overheating. Therefore, it often refuses in traffic jams. By the way, during the last revision, an additional heat exchanger was installed in the automatic transmission crankcase, which removes excess heat. It must be admitted that all these measures did not have the desired effect. Therefore, after restyling in 2017, only the modern 6-speed automatic transmission from Aisin remained in the Peugeot arsenal. This unit showed itself from the best side - there are practically no complaints about it.
There are also no complaints about both mechanical boxes. By the way, a 5-speed “mechanics” and a 6-band “automatic” are combined with gasoline engines, and only a 6-speed manual gearbox is combined with a diesel engine. The internal "offal" of these units will not cause problems for a very long time, if you do not forget to periodically change the oil. True, even before the end of the service life of the manual transmission, you will have to repair the link of the gear lever. The repair kit costs a penny, however, as does the work of installing it. When buying a used 406, check the condition of the CV joints. To do this, turn the wheels all the way and start moving. At the same time, check the operation of the parking brake - replacing it, along with cables and related parts, is quite expensive.

There is not so much crime in the Peugeot 406 suspension. Yes, and the design is quite simple - MacPherson strut in front, and a semi-independent beam in the back. However, many owners of the first cars were extremely annoyed by strong knocks in the front suspension, mainly from the shock absorber mounts. Although the stabilizer struts and even the rear silent blocks could make unpleasant sounds. Do not be alarmed if you hear breakdowns of the rear suspension on a country road or rough road. This is the misfortune of all cars built on the platform of the 308th Peugeot. The short-travel suspension simply does not have time to work out the bumps and “sags” all the way, making rumbling knocks. It is treated by replacing shock absorbers with more energy-intensive ones.

At the same time, be prepared to renew ball bearings and wheel bearings every 70,000-100,000 km. Consumables in the suspension are struts and stabilizer bushings, which live 25,000-50,000 km. Two times less likely to have to update the thrust bearings of the front struts. Their wear can be determined by the springy sound when turning the steering wheel. In an electrician, the keyless access system is occasionally buggy, power windows can begin to live their own lives, and the multimedia system fails. Against this background, often burned-out bulbs of external and interior lighting are just a trifle.

Be that as it may, a used Peugeot 406 is not much inferior to most classmates in terms of reliability. Yes, of course, he is not deprived of problems. However, if you take the car after restyling, and in our review we are considering them, it turns out that there is nothing special to break here. Engines have become more reliable, 6-speed automatic transmissions have become indestructible, and the suspension, due to the simplicity of its design, is by no means expensive. This is the case when the car almost completely got rid of bad heredity.
