Cons of used Peugeot 508 2011-2018 with mileage

So, the Body iron of the Peugeot 508 is good at resisting the onslaught of corrosion. But, despite this, on the oldest specimens, you can already find small traces of rust. Red spots appear on the traditionally most vulnerable places: the leading edge of the roof and wheel arches. Another vulnerable spot is the wheel arches hidden behind the wheel arches. The fact is that dirt constantly accumulates behind the wheel arch liners, which plays the role of a catalyst for corrosion processes. Unfortunately, in our conditions it is almost impossible to constantly wash out the dirt from under the wheel arch liners. The body paint of the Peugeot 508 is thin, so chips and scratches appear very quickly. But since this problem is common in most modern cars, it is easy to come to terms with it. It's harder to put up with the fact that the fenders are in contact with the bumper every now and then. Due to constant contact, the paintwork at the junction eventually wipes down to the metal.
Even very careful owners can see the water in the trunk of a Peugeot 508. The fact is that the design of the trunk lid initially turned out to be not very successful, because of which, when it is opened, part of the moisture collected on it goes straight into the luggage compartment. In addition, over time, the tailgate stops lose their tightness, which also contributes to the penetration of moisture into the interior. It is even worse if the owner forgets about preventive cleaning of the drain holes and brings them to clogging. Not only the luggage compartment lining and the things in it get from the water, but also the door handles equipped with a keyless entry system. As a rule, the system functions properly for 7-8 years, after which it first starts to fail, and then completely fails. A new original door handle with a keyless entry system will cost at least 16-17 thousand rubles. Quality analogs of Chinese production, which will cost 2-3 thousand rubles, save from unnecessary expenses.
On those Peugeot 508s that were released from 2011 to 2013, poorly positioned wiper motors also suffered from moisture. And since in the French sedan, each leash is driven by a separate motor, the owners often had to change them in a couple. The price of the issue is from 15 thousand rubles for each motor. Unfortunately, disassembly, drying and cleaning of a failed part does not always help. Unpleasant surprises can also be expected from the power windows . Their casters are made of plastic that degrades over time. In turn, this leads to biting of the cable and immobilization of the mechanism. Fortunately, a relatively inexpensive repair kit, which will cost the owners 2.5-3 thousand rubles, helps to bring the windows back to life. There are practically no complaints about the durability of the interior. Salon plastic is mostly soft and expensive. With age, if he starts to creak, then quite a bit. The real age and mileage of the used Peugeot 508 will be indicated only by the steering wheel, which is already overwritten by the run of 70-80 thousand kilometers. When inspecting the interior of a used Peugeot 508, special attention should be paid to the cup holders. They have a retractable contraction, which is relatively easy to damage.
A sedan with a gasoline engine should be chosen very carefully. Both power units available for the Peugeot 508 belong to the EP6 family and have a volume of 1.6 liters. The basic version of the 1.6-liter unit develops 120 horsepower. The second engine, thanks to the turbocharger, produces 150 horsepower. The weak point of both motors is the timing chain drive . In the early years, when the 1.6-liter engine was just beginning to be installed on the PSA model, some owners were faced with stretching and jumping of the chain at very low mileage. Fortunately, by the time the Peugeot 508 1.6 debuted, both versions of the 1.6-liter engine had been heavily redesigned, resulting in less chain hopping. The fact that the gas distribution mechanism urgently requires intervention will be prompted by the uncharacteristically loud noise of a running engine. All other things being equal, more problems should be expected from the more powerful 150-horsepower 1.6 THP unit. By a run of 100-120 thousand kilometers, problems begin to arise with the high-pressure fuel pump, and after a few tens of thousands of kilometers, the high-pressure fuel pump has to be changed altogether. The price of the issue is at least 40-45 thousand rubles. Those who want to save money can try to restore the pump, which will cost 8-10 thousand rubles. A 1.6 THP valve cover can withstand on average 100 to 150 thousand kilometers. At this point, the membrane inside is completely ruptured, after which the power unit begins to "eat up" the oil. Another possible reason for a sudden oily appetite is chilled valve stem seals. The mark of 150 thousand kilometers usually becomes critical for the thermostat. For the same mileage, the owners are faced with minor leaks in the tubes that serve to supply lubricant to the turbine. Another disadvantage of 1.6-liter units is that, regardless of power, they tend to form carbon deposits on the intake valves. As a result, the performance of the power unit drops slightly, and with the onset of cold weather, the owners begin to face problems with a cold start.
From the point of view of reliability, diesel engines look preferable. The base diesel unit is the 1.6 HDI engine with 112 horsepower. In addition, the motor line includes engines of 2.0 and 2.2 liters with a capacity of 136 and 204 horsepower, respectively. In addition, a more powerful 2.0 HDI engine modification was available for the Peugeot 508, developing 163 horsepower. Regardless of the volume and power, all diesel units have a particulate filter in their design. Another common feature of all diesel engines is the belt wire of the gas distribution mechanism, which requires replacement every 140 thousand kilometers. The new timing kit is inexpensive: about 6-7 thousand rubles. Approximately the same amount will have to be left in the workshop for replacing the timing . To the level of 120-150 thousand kilometers, the supports of the power unit fail. Moreover, this is true for both gasoline and diesel engines.
Depending on the type and power of the power unit, the Peugeot 508 was equipped with 5-speed and 6-speed manual transmissions. In addition, a 6-speed robotic transmission and a 6-speed automatic transmission were available for the French sedan. On the secondary market, copies with a "robot" are rare. And this is, perhaps, for the better, since with long runs there will be a priori more problems with the "robot". An automatic transmission from Aisin looks more preferable in all respects. An important nuance: the Peugeot 508 with a gasoline engine was equipped with an “automatic” with an internal factory index AT6, with a diesel power unit - AM6. This will have to be taken into account in the event of a possible repair. If you buy a Peugeot 508 manufactured before October 2015, you should know that there was a design flaw in its automatic transmission. Namely, the shaft ring of the clutch packs wore out quickly, which led to a decrease in the operating oil pressure. As a result, the box began to change gears with jerks. Fortunately, Aisin specialists quickly responded to the problem. First, the dealers received a repair kit and all the necessary documentation on the repair technology, and a little later the ring lock was modernized, which finally solved the problem.
It is generally accepted that all French cars have a very soft and comfortable suspension. Peugeot 508 is an exception in this regard. The irregularities of the French sedan are pretty tough. On the other hand, the handling of the "five hundred and eighth" will not be able to find fault with all the desire. The front suspension uses the McPherson design. But only if we are talking about conventional sedan versions. Designing the GT version, the engineers decided that it would be more expedient to replace the McPherson scheme with a multi-link suspension. Of course, in the event of repairs, it will require large financial investments, but this is quite an adequate payment for improved controllability. You should not be afraid of the front multi-link suspension on the Peugeot 508 GT also because the French used the same design solution on the Citroen C5 and Peugeot 407 . So the mechanics specializing in "French" will not be surprised by the "multi-link".
There are no complaints about the reliability of the " consumables " of the Peugeot 508 suspension. Silent blocks on both axles can easily withstand from 100 to 150 thousand kilometers. Shock absorbers have about the same resource. Wheel bearings serve less: depending on operating conditions, from 80 to 120 thousand kilometers. It is interesting that if on the GT version the front wheel bearings can be replaced separately, then on the other modifications of the French sedan they will have to be changed together with the hub. If you carefully study the specialized forums, it turns out that some owners of the Peugeot 508 managed to encounter unexpectedly bursting front springs. But the mechanics of their specialized workshops assure that such problems are rare. Moreover, on many specimens with high mileage, the original springs have long been replaced.
The reliability of the Peugeot 508 steering rack can be estimated at four. For a run of 120-150 thousand kilometers, she begins to tap. On the GT version with a diesel engine, the problem is different: by the same mileage, the steering rack usually starts to leak a little. Most owners are not ready to spend money on a new rail. Rescue repairs save, which, depending on the neglect of the situation, will cost from 15 to 20 thousand rubles.
